1. Clash Along Nine Mile Run Marker
The action here was just one of several fronts where fighting took place on May 3, 1863, during the Chancellorsville Campaign. That morning at Fredericksburg, 10 miles east of here, the Army of the Potomac's VI Corps and a division of the I Corps.battled Confederates for the town's western heights. Later in the day, the VI Corps fought Confederates again at Salem Church. Meanwhile, beginning at daybreak at the Chancellorsville crossroads (about a mile in front of you), Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart commanded fierce assaults against the bowed Federal line that eventually compelled the Union army to fall back to a new position.
On this front, Union Col. John Brooke's II Corps brigade Corps brigade manned an entrenched position about 300 yards in front of you—100 yards west of Nine Mile Run.

With over 17,000 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing, the fighting at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863, was the second bloodiest day of the Civil War, behind only the Battle of Antietam.
