There are several subspecies of giraffes in Africa. You can see two of those subspecies here at the Giraffe Shamba - Reticulated and Masai. Can you tell them apart?
Reticulated Giraffe
Reticulated giraffes are easy to spot. Look for large brown-orange patches clearly defined by thick, white outlines.
Masai Giraffe
Often darker than the other giraffe subspecies, Masai giraffes have large, deep brown, leaf-shaped patches separated by crooked, light brown lines.
Giraffes In Africa
Giraffe populations were always thought to be stable. In recent years giraffe numbers have dropped dramatically and, in fact, several subspecies are now critically endangered.
While habitat destruction and loss of food sources may play a role in this decline, further research is urgently needed to understand what is happening to these beautiful animals.
