Inscription. By the mid 19th century the United States was expanding westward toward huge territories loosely governed by Mexico. Though officially part of Mexico, these sprawling territories were in fact too far from Mexico City and had been neglected too long to be controlled effectively. Increasing tensions between Mexico and the United States finally led to war, and U.S. forces invaded California in 1846. Troops under the command of Fremont avoided the well- traveled Gaviota route in favor of the unexpected route over San Marcos Pass. Several battles occurred between US and Californio forces, but many Californians had already resigned themselves to becoming part of the United States. The Mexican American War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Mexico gave up all of its northwestern territories, including California. In return the United States paid Mexico $15 million, agreed to recognize rancho land grants and offered US citizenship to Mexican residents. These dramatic event and the discovery of gold rushed California toward statehood in 1850.
