1. Queen Mary Hospital Marker
The first sanatorium in the world devoted exclusively to the treatment of children with tuberculosis, Queen Mary Hospital was opened in 1913. It formed part of a complex with the Toronto Hospital for Consumptives, which had been established in 1904, and continued that institution's pioneering programs in the care of children. In 1923 its services were expanded with the addition of a new wing and the opening of a school under the supervision of the Toronto Board of Education. The incidence of tuberculosis decreased during the following decades, fewer patients and declining use finally leading to closure of the hospital in 1970. Four years later the building was demolished and West Park Hospital, a chronic care and rehabilitation centre, was erected on the site.
