[English] Dave Rollins known as Uncle Dave passed away on January 24th 1927 at the age of 96. He was believed to be the oldest male slave in eastern Kentucky if not the whole state. Uncle Dave who lived on the hill back of Raceland was born on the Nichols plantation near Greenup, and at the outbreak of the Civil War was freed by the Nichols to join the union army, where he took part in several major battles during his four years in the army. As a reward for his service he received a pension from the government, and several acres of land from the Nichols which enabled him to live comfortably during the reclining years of his life.
