Devil Facial Tumor Disease
This disease is a rare form of cancer characterized by large tumors around the mouth and head, eventually spreading to the rest of the body.
As it is contagious between devils, it is the greatest threat to the devil population.
Since this disease was identified (early 1990s) the devil population has decreased by approximately 80%
Road kill
Because devils are scavengers, they often feed off road kill - making them very vulnerable to becoming road kill as well.
Habitat destruction
Development and landscape alteration is destroying devil habitat - making it harder and harder to find proper nesting sites for the devils.
Benefits to Humans
They play a role as "nature's auditor" meaning they "remove" sick, slow, diseased, and dead animals from the landscape.
They are an important line of defense against introduced/invasive species (feral cats, ferrets, etc).
A rapid decline of this species will have a noticeable impact on the ecology of the landscape and lifecycles of Tasmania flora and fauna.
