De Sint-Jorisdoelen
⎯⎯⎯
The St. George Guildhall
Inscription.

The St. George Guildhall
The marksmen of the medieval St. George Guild (Sint-Jorisdoelen) guarded the city at night but were also deployed to quell civil unrest, for instance. Each member paid for his own expensive armor, making membership a matter of prestige. Their shooting ranges — featuring targets known as doelen - were usually situated along the city ramparts to accommodate the long distances involved. Over time, the guild's clubhouse also came to be known as the Doelen. The original guildhall stood on Doelenstraat — also along the ramparts — but later relocated to this site. The current building, featuring an impressive interior, was erected in 1762. The civic guard was disbanded in 1795, after which the building served as a barracks and a school until its restoration in 1987.
