Cold air moving down the glacier’s surface pours into the lower Mendenhall Valley influencing the temperature and wind patterns. Temperatures here are generally 10 degrees cooler than 5 miles down the valley.
People who live near the glacier during the winter may shovel 50% more snow from their driveways than people who live near the airport. On some days you can feel the cooling presence of the moist glacier from this point.
