1. Monarch Habitat Marker

Inscription. Each fall, hundreds of millions of monarch butter-flies migrate from the United States and Canada to overwintering areas in California and Mexico where they wait out the winter until conditions favor a return flight in the spring. The monarch migration is truly one of the world's greatest natu-ral wonders, yet it is threatened by habitat loss in North America. Milkweeds and nectar sources for Monarchs are declining due to development and the widespread use of herbicides in croplands, pastures, and roadsides. In the last 20 years, the population of monarch butterflies in the Western U.S. has declined by 75 percent.

How Can You Help?
Plant flowering plants!
Adult monarchs will drink the nectar of many flowers in addition to milk-weed; in fact they need sources of nectar to nourish them throughout the entire growing season. Include a variety of native flowering species with different bloom times to provide monarchs with the food they need to reproduce in the spring and summer and to migrate in the fall. Plant milkweed plants!
Monarchs cannot survive without milkweed; their caterpillars only eat milkweed plants, and the adults need milkweed to lay their eggs. Planting milkweed is a great way to help other pollinators too, as they provide valuable nectar resources to a diverse suite of bees and butterflies.
