Der Chemiker Robert Bunsen und der Physiker Gustav Kirchhoff begründeten im Jahre 1859 in Heidelberg die Spektralanalyse. Dabei wird das von den Atomen eines Gases ausgesandte Licht durch ein Prisma in seine Regenbogenfarben aufgeweitet. Die Farblinien in diesem „Spektrum“ verraten, welche Atomarten das Licht aussenden. Mit dieser Methode lassen sich nicht nur im Labor neue Elemente entdecken, sondern sogar in den Gashüllen der Sterne – wie etwa das Helium in der Sonne.

(English Translation)
The chemist Robert Bunsen and the physicist Gustav Kirchhoff established spectral analysis in Heidelberg in 1859. In this process, the light emitted by the atoms of a gas is separated by a prism into the colors of the rainbow. The colored lines in this “spectrum” reveal which types of atoms are emitting the light. This method can be used not only to discover new elements in the laboratory, but also to identify them in the gaseous layers of stars—such as helium in the Sun.
