Mikel Fabian Haman (Paramaribo, 26 July 1963 – Amsterdam, 3 January 2018) was a Surinamese-Dutch AIDS and gay rights activist.(Submitted on September 20, 2026.)
Haman dedicatedhimself to advancing the emancipation and well-being of the Surinamese-Caribbean LGBTQIA+ community. He also campaigned against conversion practices and 'healing' rituals aimed at altering sexual orientation. Furthermore, Haman was a co-initiator of 'Pink Sunday' at the Kwaku Summer Festival and organized the first Surinamese-themed evening at the De Lellebel café in Amsterdam. During the 2009 Amsterdam Gay Pride Canal Parade, he hosted Elvira Sweet—then the district chair of Amsterdam-Zuidoost—on a Caribbean-themed boat. In 2017, Mikel Haman recorded the music video Kom uit de Kast ('Come Out of the Closet') alongside dozens of Surinamese artists; contributors included Denise Jannah, Ronald Snijders, and Patrick Tevreden. The song, performed by the Corona Band, offered support to the LGBTQIA+ community in Suriname, for whom the closet remains a place of hiding. 2. KOM UIT DE KAST - Corona Band & Friends (Youtube, 4:47). “In May 2017, CORONA BAND released the song "KOM UIT DE KAST" (Come Out of the Closet), written by Jan Bruyning and Steven (Fer) Faerber. This song inspired Mikel F. Haman (SURVIBES Foundation) and Guus Pengel to create an all-star version featuring a clear call for a gay-straight coalition in Suriname and the Netherlands. In Suriname, the work was carried out by Parea (Winston Lieveld), the Women’s Rights Centre (Carla Bakboord), and the LGBT Platform. The song was released in July 2017 and marked the start of a campaign regarding pride and the acceptance of LGBTQI+ individuals.” (Submitted on September 20, 2026.)
