Inscription.
First town meeting at Stephen Austins home Mar. 22, 1748.
First church organized 1750.
First school built 1766.

Queen's fort of Narragansett Indian fame, a part of Pettaguamscutt purchase 1657, five hundred acres given in 1695 by Samuel Sewall and Hannah his wife "to support a learned, sober, orthodox schoolmaster." Five hundred acres given Harvard College in 1696 "for a scholarship" which still exists through a fund invested by sale of the land, are all in this town.
 
Erected 1936 by The Tercentenary Committee.
