1. International Tennis Hall of Fame Marker

Inscription.
You are standing at the entrance to the Newport Casino, a National Historic Landmark, now home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Built in 1880 as a social club, the name is not indicative of gambling. "Casino" is derived from the Italian phrase la casina or "little house." The Newport Casino was designed by McKim, Mead & White and is one of the finest examples of American Shingle Style Architecture.

In 1881, this site was the host to the first United States National Lawn Tennis Championships. In 1915, that tournament was moved to New York and is now known as the US Open.

With the site's great tennis history, Newporter Jimmy Van Alen determined it would be an ideal venue for a tennis museum, and went on to found the Hall of Fame in 1954. Since the Hall of Fame's inception, the ultimate honor in tennis has been bestowed upon 270 individuals from 28 nations.
