Basque Block in Boise in Ada County, Idaho — The American West (Mountains)
Adelia Garro Simplot
In Commemoration
| — | Basque Museum and Cultural Center | — |
Her conservation efforts began when she made the decision to save the Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House in 1983. She led the formation of the nonprofit group, the Basque Cultural Center of Idaho, Inc., later renamed Basque Museum & Cultural Center, Inc., to promote Basque history and culture. After making the house payments for three years, Adelia and her husband, Richard R. Simplot, donated the house to the Basque Museum & Cultural center. Today, the Cyrus Jacobs/Uberuaga House is the oldest surviving brick residence in Boise City.
Adelia’s vision and perseverance also led to the following buildings being saved, preserved, and now actively used by the Basque Museum & Cultural Center:
202 S Capitol Blvd and Grove Street - Cub Bar (now Bar Gernika)
Purchased by the Basque Museum & Cultural Center, 1990
611 Grove Street - home of the Basque Museum & Cultural Center since 1993
Purchased by Adelia, her father-in-law, J.R. Simplot, and local businesspeople, 1989
619 Grove Street - Anduiza Boarding House with enclosed Fronton Court
Purchased by Adelia and her friend, Richard Hormaechea, 1993
“For and in consideration of our love and affection for the Basque heritage and history in the State of Idaho...”
-Adelia Garro Simplot, 1986
