St. Robert in Pulaski County, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Motel St. Louis
Known as the "Motel Beautiful" in its heyday, the Motel St. Louis was truly worthy of a sign befitting its nickname. Charming travelers beginning in the 1940s, the motel was located at 5028 N. Lindbergh Blvd., one of many streets that made up Route 66 through St. Louis. The motel boasted 44 "Ultra-modern units" and even provided station wagon service to St. Louis Lambert International Airport. However, the airport would ultimately be the motel's downfall as it closed in the 1960s to make room for runway expansion.
Thankfully, the sign survived, carted away to St. James with a new resourceful owner of a roadside motel - still on Route 66 - who changed the neon to read "Motel 300 Ft."
It remained in that condition for 30 years before the New Hope Church in St. James covered it with the church's signage. In 2015, the Route 66 Association of Missouri recovered the sign. The Association and the Missouri History Museum worked together to refurbish it for an outside display at the museum's exhibit along the Mother Road in 2016-17. After four years in storage, the neon has now been restored for its new home here at the Route 66 Neon Park.
