St. Robert in Pulaski County, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Alura Motel
The Alura Motel, later known as the Lin-Air Motel, was located at 4665 N. Lindbergh Blvd. in St. Louis. It was built by Paul Lammers in the late 1940s, and he owned and operated it until 1960. At that time, he built the Sands Motel across the street, which later became the Henry VIII Inn and Lodge. Both motels were part of a group of 10 motels and hotels built along North Lindbergh Boulevard near St. Louis Lambert Airport. The group included two other motels, Motel St. Louis and the Stanley Cour-Tel, whose signs are now displayed at the Route 66 Neon Park. The Alura was advertised as having "24 modern units with television, radiant heat, air cooled." It was one of the first motels in St. Louis to have forced air. In the 1980s, after Route 66 had been decommissioned, it changed ownership and became the Lin-Air Motel. The building was demolished in the late 1990s to make room for an airport expansion. The sign was purchased by Friends of the Mother Road, Inc. and eventually made its way to Henry's Rabbit Ranch in Staunton, IL, in late 2004. Rich Henry took care of and displayed the sign for 13 years until its owner, the Friends of the Mother Road, Incl, donated it for the Neon Park. The motel lettering is presented in an uncommon neon style called "triple stroke," with the letters outlined with an additional stroke of neon in the middle. This design, combined with its animated arrows, created a classic and highly visible calling card during its Route 66 heyday.
