Mallegatsluis

Mallegat Lock
Mallegat Lock
The predecessor to the current Mallegatsluis (“Mallegat Lock”) was located 50 meters further west and dated back to 1577. Demolition materials from the Noodgodskapel (Chapel of Our Lord of Sorrows) were used in its construction. The current lock was built in 1764 because the old one had become too dilapidated. Two natural stone reliefs in the eastern wall of the lock chamber, as well as the large white lock-keeper's house, serve as reminders of that reconstruction. Major maintenance was required in 1884, necessitating the lock's closure for three months. There was subsequent speculation about building a third Mallegatsluis, but this never materialized. The lock's current appearance, featuring electric lifting gates, dates from the final renovation carried out in 1941 and 1942. The lock underwent further restoration in 2002 and 2003, during which time it was closed for several months.
