Inscription.
Built in 1839, a 35 foot high wood lighthouse served as a guide to Sag Harbor whalers. Rebuilt in 1868 in what is called Boston Granite Style architecture. The four story tower was decommissioned in 1934. The old lighthouse stood on an island 200 yards off shore. But in 1938 the famous hurricane filled the gap with sand making the island a peninsula.
