Guarding the Tower
Yeoman Warders have guarded the Tower of London since the 1500s. They were originally part of the personal bodyguard for the king or queen.
Today’s Yeoman Warders, or “Beefeaters,” have all served at least 22 years in the armed forces and have been awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct medal. This group of 37 men and women live here with their families.

3. Tower of London - Yeomen of the Guard, Beefeaters
The back of the postcard reads: “The quaintly attired Warders or Beefeaters are all old soldiers of meritorious service. The term Beefeaters is commonly explained as a corruption of Buffetiers, or attendants at the Royal Buffet, but is more probably a nickname bestowed upon the ancient Yeomen of the Guard from their well-fed appearance or the fact that rations of beef were regularly served out to them when on duty.”
