Medieval Jews were frequently imprisoned at the Tower of London. England’s Jews were taxed very heavily, and many wealthy Jews were imprisoned while their finances were investigated by the Crown.
There were mass imprisonments too. In 1278–9, over 600 Jews were imprisoned at the Tower. Some stayed in cellars and stables, and one woman even in the Tower’s empty Elephant House.
