Inscription.
Patti Carr Black, a cultural historian whose works are vital to understanding the arts and literature of Mississippi, was born in 1934 and grew up in Sumner. Educated at Mississippi University for Women and Emory University, Black was director of the Old Capitol Museum and a leading light at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Her earliest publications accompanied museum exhibitions, reflecting a keen interest in both fine and folk arts. Black's Art in Mississippi: 1790-1980 is a comprehensive study of the state's visual arts and artists. She also wrote books about artist Walter Anderson, writer Eudora Welty, and other creative Mississippians, as well as Touring Literary Mississippi with Marion Barnwell. Black received major awards for her exceptional career, including a Governor's Award from the Mississippi Arts Commission and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters.
