1792–1822
“We are all Greeks”, proclaimed Percy Bysshe Shelley (Sussex 1792–Livorno 1822) in the preface to his poem Hellas, urging Europeans to support the Greek War for Independence. A descendant of an aristocratic family and a groundbreaking poet since his teenage years, he worked in support of the Greek cause, together with his second wife, Mary Shelley. His untimely death from drowning in Italy prevented him from visiting Greece and seeing his dream come true. He managed, however, to implant his faith in the Revolution in his close friend, Lord Byron.
