Inscription. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, based in Volusia County, was a trailblazing educator, civil-rights leader, and presidential advisor. She established the Daytona Normal & Industrial School in 1904—later Bethune-Cookman University—empowering generations of Black Floridians through education. Bethune became the first Black woman to lead a federal agency, founded the National Council of Negro Women, and ensured access to public spaces, including Bethune Beach. Today, a statue in her honor stands in National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C.
