History of Lenexa's Skate Park
The original city skate park located here opened in 2002. It was built after a local group of teens came together to ask the governing body to build a skate park. Community input was gathered on this request and was supported. One notorious comment at a community meeting from a young boy was, "Just don't build it so that it sucks!" The teens' dream became reality with the help and dedication of the Parks & Recreation Department, which oversaw the original project.

The skate park you see before you, Rolling Magic, was a relocation and reconstruction project completed in 2023. The project was identified as part of the 2012 Parks & Recreation Master Plan and was a high priority project for many years. The reconfiguration of this space allowed the addition of dedicated parking and offers a wider range of recreational level usage. It provides a safe environment for users of all ages and abilities to meet and share experiences through action sports (skateboarding, BMX, scooters, wheelchairs and inline skating). In keeping with tradition, community input heavily shaped the new skate park

design and the name. Today's Rolling Magic embraces the City of Lenexa's Vision 2040 goals to create inviting places and healthy people.

Tribute to the Original Rolling Magic Skate Park
The name Rolling Magic was inspired by a privately owned skate park that was developed and operated in Lenexa in the late 1970s. This state-of-the-art facility was located at 9633 Rosehill Rd. near 95th St. and I-35 and included a large bowl, snake runs, keyholes and other features in the skating area. It also included a two-level dome with an arcade, soda bar and pro shop. While the original Rolling Magic was only in operation for a few years, its originality and inventiveness were a clear inspiration for the skate park that exists today.

Did you know?
The sport of skateboarding started in the 1950s by combining roller skating and surfing. Surfers wanted something to do when waves were low which led them to add roller skates to their surfboards. These early boards were called asphalt surfers.
