Sunrise Retirement in Lenexa in Johnson County, Kansas — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Depot Operations & Layout
Section Crews
Section crews were responsible for maintaining the railways. These crews replaced ties and installed new tracks and spikes to keep the route smooth and usable. The crews were responsible for 10-15 miles of track.
These workers were sometimes referred to as Gandy Dancers. 'Gandy' came from the Chicago manufacturing company that made railroad tools. 'Dancer' came from the way they kept rhythm with their singing as they worked. Many of the rail workers were immigrants from Mexico or Europe. Rail companies assigned these laborers to assist with the difficult and dangerous job. The workers often lived in segregated bunk cars and camps along their rail section on the outskirts of town. They would work for three weeks of the month and return to their homes in surrounding towns for a week.
Station Agent
The depot was managed by a single station agent who handled all depot operations. The first room contained a waiting room with benches and a coal-burning, pot belly stove. The second room is where the agent managed the depot operations.
The third room was the baggage room. The agent's duties included managing telegrams from Western Union, handling all mail and freight, selling tickets and travel insurance, issuing baggage checks, and keeping records.
