Inscription. In 1792, the state contracted with the Conewago Company to build a canal to bypass the perilous Conewago Falls. Constructed under engineer James Brindely, it was a mile long, 40 feet wide, and 4 feet deep with two locks. In 1797, it was officially opened by Governor Thomas Mifflin, becoming the state's first canal. It served as the model for hundreds of miles of canals, spurring industrial and agricultural growth locally and statewide.
