Post Headquarters
Fort Mott State Park
Once the administrative heart of the fort, the Post Headquarters housed the office of the Post Commander. The other personnel assigned to the headquarters were the Materiel officer and the Adjutant. Activities such as general corresponcence, basic orders, and responses to Army requests were managed through this building. When Fort Du Pont in Delaware was assigned the administrative responsibility for Fort Mott it was converted into a residence.
Built in 1902, the house reflects the Army's commitment to high quality construction. The roof of the Post Headquarters is slate, and the porch roof is painted, galvanized steel. Gutters were not hung off the roof edge, but were elegantly hidden within the architectural detail. The clapboard siding is traditional in Army construction of this period. Today, the headquarters is one of the last remaining original buildings at Fort Smith.
