1. Fall River and Ponta Delgada, Sister Cities Marker
Gates of the City in Fall River is a replica of Portas de Cidade located in the municipality of Ponta Delgada, on the island of Sao Miguel (St. Michael), in the Azores, Portugal.
Portas de Cidade, are impressive arched gateways built in the 18th century. Portas de Cidade form the entrance to the city of Ponta Delgada from the port and harbor onto Praca de Republica (Republic Square). The doors are a symbol of the primitive land defense of the city, on the southwest coast of the island, and are the historic gateway of Azorean emigration.
The Fall River Gates unveiled in 2006, face Ponta Delgada Boulevard on Crab Pond near Battleship Cove. The gates stand 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide. Their construction was a collaboration between Fall River and Azorean artizans and craftsmen.
Many of Fall River's residents have emigrated from Sao Miguel as well as six of the islands of the Azores, resulting in a strong and enduring relationship between Fall River and its sister city of Ponta Delgada.
