1. Bowers Beach Maritime Museum Marker
Inscription.
The Bowers Beach Maritime Museum began in 1975, with informal displays in two rooms of an 1888 Main Street house once owned by boat captain Van Tozour and his wife, "Aunt Bess." The property became home to a growing collection of maritime artifacts. With support from Kent County, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Longwood Foundation, and others, the museum expanded in 2016 with a new building. Its exhibits preserve the history of the Delaware Bay community and the watermen who made their living here. The museum also sponsors community events, including the Buccaneer Bash and Heritage Day, which reflect local maritime traditions.
