St. Clair Shores in Macomb County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
The Finest in the Country
Located on the shores of Lake St. Clair at the intersection of Masonic Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue, the Detroit Masonic Country Club designed by architect George W. Graves opened in the early 1920s. The country club sat on 87 acres of land and included a golf course and a large club building with dormitories, private bedrooms, an observation tower, and billiard and card rooms. From the upper balcony, one had a panoramic view of the entire golf course along with 11 baseball diamonds, an athletic field, and Lake St. Clair in the distance.
Famed golf architect William H. Diddle designed a new 18-hole course in 1926. The Golf House located at the center of the course had double-decked balconies that overlooked the first and ninth tees. Other facilities included tennis courts a beach and water slide, and horse riding. There were an outdoor grandstand and a screened-in dance pavilion. Later, they added a small petting zoo.
Its name changed to Lakeshore Country Club in 1927. A few years later, an economic downturn due to the stock markert, as well as damage from a severe storm, forced the club to close. In the early 1940s, the Village of St. Clair Shores acquired the land in lieu of taxes. On August 24, 1945, they opened Veteran's Memorial Park.
