USS Lionfish
SS 298
A WWII fleet submarine
Built in Pennsylvania, commissioned in 1944 in New Hampshire and quickly ordered into World War II action, USS Lionfish entered Japanese waters on April 1, 1945. For five months, until the end of the war, she offered dedicated service. She rescued a downed crew of a US B-29 plane, destroyed a schooner with her guns, and sank a Japanese submarine.
Decommissioned after the war in 1946, she was brought back to action and recommissioned for the Korean War in 1951. Again decommissioned after the war ended in 1953, she eventually made her way to Providence, Rhode Island. There, she served as a reserve training submarine. Finally, she arrived at Battleship Cove in 1974.
Lionfish is representative of over 200 submarines that served in the "Silent Service" during WWII. They were less than 2% of the total US Navy, yet these stealthy boats sank 55% of all Japanese vessels.
