Fall River in Bristol County, Massachusetts — The American Northeast (New England)
Boats + Rescue Craft
The battleship carried several smaller boats, such as this utility boat, two motor whale boats, and one boat just for the captain. They were used for duties like moving supplies and delivering mail, as well as taking sailors to ports and beaches for recreation. With such a large crew, it could be hard to grab a spot on a departing boat.
There were also 25 life rafts on board of varying sizes, but in total, they could hold less than half the crew. Floater nets—rope nets with attached flotation—were meant to supplement in case of a sinking.
