1. Colonel Thomas Rainsborough Marker
Inscription. In October 1648, Colonel Thomas Rainsborough, a Parliamentarian, was lodging in what was the Crown Inn which was opposite this location. He was on his way to the siege at Pontefract Castle. Royalist soldiers from Pontefract came to Doncaster with the intention of kidnapping him to use him as a hostage to gain the release of a comrade. They bungled the kidnap and Rainsborough was accidentally killed.
