The Fighting Flares Up Again
Central and southern Germany continue to be ravaged by war. Beyond Germany’s northern borders, Denmark and Sweden fight each other in Holstein. On May 11, the Bavarian field marshal Franz von Mercy captures Überlingen. At the end of July, a Bavarian army commanded by Franz von Mercy and Johann von Werth captures Freiburg im Breisgau.

During three days in August, battles are fought at several locations around Freiburg against French forces under Turenne and Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé. Although the French claim victory, they lose 70 percent of their soldiers during the fighting. Troops on both sides refuse to pursue the enemy. This prevents a further French advance into southern Germany. Separated by the Black Forest, both armies march northward.

The Imperial forces fare worse in the north, where they attempt to support the Danes. At the Battle of Jüterbog, they are almost completely destroyed by Swedish forces under Torstensson. This opens the way for Swedish troops to advance
