adopted a constitution based on the estates, they called upon the other Habsburg territories to join them. The Protestant Union was divided, however, and the Free Imperial Cities in particular opposed the ambitions of Frederick V, Elector Palatine. Ferdinand II was deposed on 26 August, followed by Frederick’s election as the new King of Bohemia. At a meeting of the Union in Rothenburg ob der Tauber on 12 September, Frederick was advised not to accept the crown. He ignored that advice.

The Bohemian uprising consequently became a matter concerning the “Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.” Archduke Ferdinand II, elected Holy Roman Emperor on 28 August, allied himself with Maximilian I of Bavaria, leader of the Catholic League. Maximilian was promised reimbursement of his war expenses and, in the event of victory, the transfer of the Palatine electoral dignity to the Bavarian branch of the Wittelsbach dynasty.
