1. History of Mountain Tourism in Golden Marker
Inscription.
With the completion of the railway in 1885 the Canadian Pacific Railway recognised that many travellers through Golden would want to stay and discover this incredible area for themselves. To this end, the CPR hired professional Swiss mountain guides to assist in providing a safe connection to this compelling yet rugged landscape. In 1899, Eduard Feuz Sr., and Christian Haesler came to Canada. In the early 20th century they were joined by Ed, Ernst and Walter Feuz, Christian Haesler Jr., Rudolf Aemmer and Christian Bohren. The C.P.R. then decided to build homes for the Swiss guides in Golden. These houses were completed in 1911, and were named Swiss Village, “Edelweiss.” In June of 1912, Ernest, Rudolph, Christian and Eduard moved their families from Switzerland to the C.P.R. Swiss Village. The Edelweiss Village still remains on Ottoson Road.

1. Edelweiss Village History (Edelweiss Village Resort).
Excerpt:  Built between 1910 and 1912, Edelweiss Village began as home to the legendary Swiss mountain guides hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway to explore, guide, and help shape mountaineering culture throughout Western Canada. Long before the Rockies became the internationally recognized destination they are today, these guides were navigating the terrain, leading first ascents, building alpine routes, and introducing generations of visitors to life in the mountains.
