January 10, Emperor Ferdinand II invites the prince-electors to a general assembly in Regensburg. However, not all the electors answer his call. The Protestant princes present cannot agree on a common position, allowing the emperor to prevail. On February 23, Frederick of the Palatinate is stripped of his electoral dignity. Against the wishes of the Spanish, the emperor’s most important allies, Maximilian I of Bavaria receives the electoral dignity without the right to pass it on to his heirs.

Near Göttingen on July 6, Protestant Palatine troops under Christian of Halberstadt defeat an imperial contingent under Franz Albrecht of Saxe-Lauenburg. Exactly one month later, Tilly gains a decisive victory at Stadtlohn over Duke Christian of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, who has entered Westphalia from the Netherlands with mercenary troops. His defeat and the destruction of his army bring the first phase of the Thirty Years’ War, the Bohemian-Palatine War, to an end.
