France positions itself

Inscription.

France positions itself
The Protestants appear largely defeated, yet the war continues. France seeks to undermine the Habsburg Empire. On April 29, King Louis XIII appoints Cardinal Richelieu to the Council of State, and on August 13 he takes over its leadership. He thus effectively directs the government of France, acting against the German emperor wherever possible. Catholic France allies itself with the Protestant powers and finances their troops. It provides substantial funding for the Dutch war effort against Catholic Spain. France also allies itself with other opponents of the Habsburgs: Savoy, Venice, and King Christian IV of Denmark. This begins the involvement of the Protestant powers of northern Europe in the Thirty Years’ War. Within France itself, however, Protestants are persecuted and suppressed. Mercenary troops move through many parts of Germany, spreading fear and terror.
