The Protestants face two capable strategists: Wallenstein and Tilly. At Dessau, Albrecht von Wallenstein defeats the Protestant army under Count Peter Ernst II von Mansfeld, who serves the Danish king. Mansfeld reorganizes his army, reinforces it with new mercenaries, and marches toward Hungary to attack the emperor’s hereditary lands. Wallenstein pursues Mansfeld and prevents the invasion of Bohemia. Mansfeld avoids an open battle and dies of illness near Sarajevo. Tilly captures Danish-occupied Hannoversch-Münden. Between Hildesheim and Salzgitter, he defeats the Protestants with his Catholic League troops and advances as far as Jutland. In Upper Austria, General Gottfried Heinrich, Count of Pappenheim, defeats the rebels at Eferding and Vöcklabruck. Wherever they pass, the troops plunder, burn, and devastate the countryside.
