The slaughter continues
After reinforcements arrive from Sweden, a Swedish army advances from Pomerania into Saxony. A battle takes place at Chemnitz on April 14, where Field Marshal Johan Banér, the victor of Wittstock, defeats the imperial troops under Matthias Gallas. He then advances, mostly victoriously, through Bohemia to Thuringia. His next objective is to relieve allies in the west. There, imperial troops under Octavio Piccolomini are successfully fighting the French. At Diedenhofen (Thionville) in Lorraine, he defeats the Marquis de Feuquières and his contingent on June 7. In July, Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar, the commander financed by France, dies. In autumn, Piccolomini is ordered back to Bohemia to support Archduke Leopold Wilhelm against the Swedes. He succeeds in temporarily driving them out of Bohemia. The siege of Bautzen ends on October 17 with the Swedish occupation of the town. After the town commander, Braun von Schmidtburg zu Schweich, defects, Kreuznach is captured by French and Saxe-Weimar troops.
