Imperial successes and negotiations
In January, Swedish, Weimar, and French troops under Johan Banér attack Regensburg. Their aim is to disrupt and dissolve the Imperial Diet meeting there. After an attack from the north, a thaw prevents them from crossing the Danube, and the attack fails. The attackers must retreat into the Upper Palatinate and Bohemia. At Neuenburg vorm Wald, Franz von Mercy defeats the Swedish rear guard with Bavarian troops. Following counterattacks and the loss of a third of his troops at Preißnitz in the Ore Mountains, Field Marshal Banér flees to Saxony with his remaining army. He dies in Halberstadt in May. Von Hatzfeld captures Dorsten, depriving the Protestant side of its most important fortress on the eastern bank of the Lower Rhine. Their troops are more successful in the territory of the Electorate of Cologne west of the Rhine. The Imperial Diet achieves no success and even weakens the emperor’s position. Sweden and France renew their

alliance. Through the mediation of the Danish king, negotiations between France, Sweden, and the emperor take place in Hamburg. A preliminary peace agreement is concluded in December. Negotiations are to continue in Münster and Osnabrück the following year.
