Among them are casualties from the Battle of the Chesapeake on September 5, 1781—a decisive naval victory that cut off the British army's escape and reinforcement by sea. The siege lasted from September 28 until the British surrender on October 19, 1781, with many soldiers subsequently dying of their wounds in the following weeks and months, primarily at the military hospital in Williamsburg.
