Inscription.
In 1883, Margaret Bancroft, a former public school teacher, opened a school on Centre Street to serve students with intellectual and developmental disabilities who were routinely excluded from public education. In 1892, Bancroft relocated the school to this location on Kings Highway. Bancroft believed that with individualized attention and well-trained educators, the children enrolled in her school could learn the life skills and gain a degree of independence. The Bancroft School operated at this location until 2017 and continues its mission at multiple locations in New Jersey.
