City of Manitowoc Eighth Street Bridge
Located on the main commercial thoroughfare of downtown Manitowoc, the Eighth Street Bridge spans the Manitowoc River and presides over the entrance to the city’s harbor. Continuously served by draw bridges since the 1860s, the site reflects the importance of the shipping industry to the city. The present bridge replaced a 1926 simple-trunnion bascule, which was typical of the design developed in Milwaukee during the first decade of the twentieth century. Fabricated by the Manitowoc Ship Building Corporation, the bridge was significant for its historical tie to the city’s maritime industry.
