Inscription. This was once Thomas Street. People of different ranks and professions originally lived and worked together here, but as Liverpool’s wealth and population grew richer people moved away. The workers and families who remained were crammed into crowded streets, with many living in dark, damp cellars. In 1790 about one in eight people in the port lived underground. Cable Street (pictured) was one of these original narrow streets, between Thomas Street and Lord Street.

As the population grew so did the number of pubs, inns and taverns. Several were run by women, while others were lodging house keepers, victuallers, and coffee house proprietors. They and other business keepers — including coal dealers, butchers, and marine stores dealers — were essential to the port’s growth.
