Inscription. The eagle on the building opposite marks the early location of Liverpool’s American Consulate. Liverpool was an important trading partner, and when the United States declared independence it sought to maintain relations with the port.

The United States formed one corner of the transatlantic slave trade triangle. By 1807, when the British Slave Trade was abolished, Liverpool’s ships had transported about 1.5 million enslaved Africans to the Americas. Liverpool merchants had strong links with cotton growers there and many supported the Confederates during the American Civil War (which technically ended with the surrender of a Confederate cruiser in the Mersey in November 1865).
