College Lane Warehouses and Maritime Trades
| — | The Heritage Trail at Liverpool ONE | — |
Inscription.
This is College Lane (originally called Workhouse Lane). Opposite the Bluecoat are two narrow brick buildings. They are rare surviving examples of the warehouses which, 200 years ago, lined the streets that now lie within and beneath Liverpool ONE. Their gable hoists and wooden doors give an idea of how the whole area would once have looked.
Many trades and professions connected with Liverpool’s maritime economy were based here. They included sail makers, blockmakers, anchorsmiths, carpenters, instrument makers, ships’ bread and biscuit manufacturers, porters, warehousemen and customs and excise officers.
