Infected Blood Inquiry Memorial
The Infected Blood Inquiry, led by Sir Brian Langstaff, examined the circumstances in which thousands of men, women and children treated by the national health services in the UK were given infected blood and blood products and the impact of these infections. It also scrutinised the response of the government, health services and professionals, and aimed to identify the organisations and individuals responsible.
The Memorial was first developed for the opening of the Inquiry in London in 2018. At the opening, and at the Inquiry hearings in Belfast, Leeds, Edinburgh, Cardiff and London in 2019, and in subsequent years, people infected and affected added glass bottles containing personal messages — right up to and beyond the publication of the Inquiry Report on 20 May 2024. Some are public and visible. Some are private and invisible.
The University of Manchester is the custodian of the Inquiry Memorial and is committed to working with the Infected Blood Memorial Committee to integrate it into research, teaching and public engagement.
The Memorial was developed in collaboration with Inquiry participants
