Inscription.

The demise of the Ontario Canoe Company in 1892 left an expanding market open for new businesses such as the Peterborough Canoe Company. However, it appears that The Peterborough Canoe Co. was actually formed six weeks before The Ontario Canoe Co. fire by established businessman and friend of Ontario Canoe Co. founder, Henry Calcutt. Based on the modest initial investment on record, historians believe that the founders did not plan to build, but to buy an existing factory. Under the new name of the Peterborough Canoe Co., James Rogers (former owner of the Ontario Canoe Co.) would be free of past debts and could start fresh with long time military allies Calcutt and E. B. Edwards. With this knowledge, it is possible that a disgruntled creditor was the arsonist who caused the Ontario Canoe Co. fire. The fire postponed the establishment of the Peterborough Canoe Co. as they had to scramble to find additional investors, but the Peterborough Canoe Co. still successfully opened on February 15th, 1893.
