Inscription. You are standing at the mouth of the Savannah River looking toward the Atlantic Ocean. This has been an important gateway linking Savannah to world markets since Europeans arrived here in 1732. Historically, ships loaded with cash crops, like cotton and rice, sailed past this point. Today, container ships carry goods from all over the world into Savannah's port.

The Savannah River's North Channel — in front of you — became the main shipping route to and from Savannah in 1909. Today, Savannah is one of the busiest ports in the country, with thousands of large cargo ships passing this point every year.
